I have been reading a lot of threads and forums (from other websites).

Are they here looking for work or as tourist? Some of them, you can readily figure it's their first time to go abroad. Some of them knew which way to skytrain.

 Susugal po ako dyan maghanap ng work

Look, i don't mean to discourage you. We, and Im speaking in behalf of the other active members/posters here in PinoySG, would want you to get a job as well otherwise we would not be posting tips and just be silently selfish.

Kailangan mo ba talagang sumugal dito?

I may be contradicting myself for discouraging you when i wrote that "FAQ- For those who are looking for job in Singapore".

It does sound encouraging.. no visa required, you got tips on how to extend and how to apply.."

I may have encouraged a number of people for that FAQ, I told the story of "what you need to know", but I did not tell the "what you need to do".

:idea:Read, Research, Ask

I myself would admit wala akong kaalam alam sa paghahanap ng job abroad 4 years ago.

Four years ago, I have this job sa pinas where any fellow engineer would envy (I have to say that, hindi po sa pagmamayabang pero for the sake of the story).

Anyway, Like you it occured to me na gusto kong magtrabaho sa ibang bansa. I sought the help of my brother sa London na doon ako titira.

Mistake #1 -2 weeks later, i resigned from my job.

Mistake # 2-I got a huge pay-off from my job, paid my debt on my credit card and happily spent half of my money here and there while waiting for my departure day.

Mistake # 3 -I did no research about London, did not submit any resume online owing to my comfort zone na may kapatid akong tutulong sakin .

Mistake # 4-I was also very very confident na makakahanap ako ng job dahil sa pangalan ng Company ko sa pinas.

And there I was, after arriving in a very different place kesa pinas.
Language, climate, people, places, socialism- everything is far different kesa pinas.

Mistake #5 -Only when i was there did i realize that I have to put effort dahil tumatakbo ang araw ay wala akong nagagawa at gumagastos ako.

Mistake no. 6 I was jobless for more than a year. and could not anymore go back to my previous company. I didn't realize I needed a Plan B in case my job hunting abroad went kapoot.!

:idea:Sigurado Ka Bang Lahat Ng Nagpupunta Dito Ay Makakahanap Ng Work?

I have to be frank with this.

Congrats [name insert here]! welcome to SG, may job ka na

Yahuuu! approve na S-pass ko!!

Oh yes, you probably are encouraged also, in-high spirits ka rin siguro pag may nababalitaan kang ganito.

But have you asked yourself, mayroon di bang hindi nakakakuha ng job?
nasaan na sila? bakit hindi nagpopost dito?

One, for obvious reasons. Two, they probably had developed this feeling of "hate" or "phobia" sa Singapore because of unfortunate adventure.

 IM ALREADY HERE IN SINGAPORE, I NEED YOUR HELP!

How many posts like these have you read: ?

I must admit napapailing ako pag may ganitong nagpo post.

Let's face it, We are all busy in our work and everyday lives.
Kung may nabasa ba kayo sa forum na " baka may opening na IT dyan, pa PM na lang ang details sakin, would you have the time and care to send him a PM??

I should tell you that Nobody ELSE can help you best but YOURSELF.
Please do an extra effort, please.

The FAQ already provides the websites and where to find jobs.
If they are not replying, don't be disheartened.

You may also be barking at the wrong tree. There are things that these employers are looking for in your resume.

Prayers also help. Spend sometime on your resume. Remember this is your future.

 Ok, SO WHAT"S YOUR POINT DRAGONFLY?

My point (or points) is that before you happily fly here in SG with hopes all held high, Stand and think for a while kung may dapat ka bang malaman at gawin bago ka sumugod.

1) Don't repeat the other's mistakes (like mine above, for example)

2) It is ok to be encouraged by stories, but DO NOT be carried away, you maybe missing the half of the story. They do not speak up for obvious reasons.

3)READ, RESEARCH, ASK. The Sticky FAQ would give you a start. Pag aralan pong mabuti.

RECENT POST

Im adding these items below that you should also be aware of:

 1) Don't wait /delay applying jobs online.

The right job you may be looking may be posted today or tonight which you might miss.

:idea:Make sure may titirhan po kayo bago magpunta dito

 Please give time to say thanks to PSG members
We know you are a newbie, understandable na magtatanong ng marami.
Please read and try to understand the existing threads before posting another question. Let's keep the forum clean.

If you post a new thread, and members answered your question and you feel that it is heplful , Please do take time to post your reply and thank them. They are helping to answer your question, kahit naman simple "thanks" would be enough to let them feel they appreciated the answer.

And it will be appreciated if you could also answer some questions that you know.. If you know the movie : PAY IT FORWARD, you know what i mean.

another good post, dragonfly!

tama ito.. let us not give them just the dos and dont's of looking for a job here... kelangan malaman din nila kung ano ang mga dapat nilang gawin at alamin BEFORE they decide to come to sg at sumugal...

and like what i always say, kelangan meron kayong PLAN B... mahirap sumugal ng walang fall back plan...

it is nice to hope for the best... but it is always best to expect the worst...

I agree with Dragonfly, most posting na nakikita lang d2 is nakahanap ng work or approve ang S-Pass or E-pass etc. Pero di lahat ng nagpupunta dito ay nakaka-hanap ng work kadalasan di narin nagpo-post yung mga di successful ex. my brother and sister who both stayed here for almost 3 months ay wala parin nahanap na work in the end balik pinas. Both are University grad. with more than 5 years experience sa banking at sa Telecommunication Customer service. Not that I discourage new comers to come but I urge them to think twice and not rely or pure luck.

Please note US is facing recession now fewer job means lesser demand it will gradually affect singapore in a way that most companies requiring foreign talents are in the manufacturing sectors. Sana di maulit recession sa Singapore way back early 2000.

Ganda ng posting mo DragonFly. Sana mabasa nila lahat to. I still believe na mas maraming umuwing luhaan kesa nakakuha ng jobs dito.

I had once helped 4 friends before. 1 lng sa kanila ang naging successful. Sana bago pumunta dito, maging prepared kc risky rin and always DEPEND ON YOURSELF.

Kudos to your post DragonFly.

wow that was really a balanced post, thorough and well explained.
In our quest for our dreams' fulfillment, we should think not only twice or thrice but several times before we move forward to our first step.

grabe ang dami kong natutunan dito, sakin naman though gusto ko tlagang magwork sa singapore [ero kung di naman papalarin, consolation ko na lang is yong matour yong singapore. yon nga lang though medyo magastos, what matters for me is i tried my best and i took the risk. kasi mhirap na in the future , mgsisi ako kung bakit may mga di ako ginwa.

God bless us all

Thank you for that post.

At least I wouldn't appear to be pessimist whenever I answer queries or PMs of some posters who DON'T have an idea about the market here in Singapore and are just relying on "prayers" and "lakas ng loob" without even thinking if their skills are marketable enough.

I have 2 ex-colleagues who have more years of experience than me in the print media industry who came here and yet went home after 4 months with no job, and holes in their pockets.

Perhaps I was luckier that I have 2 offers that came on hand but that was only after 1.5 months of prowling on the job boards and submitting countless CVs online. I already have a regional experience plus a bit of Mandarin skills to boot, but still it wasn't so easy.

I feel sorry for those CVs that I read ( I work in a recruitment and selection firm, not an agency) from jobseekers who just worked for a local Phil company with just provincial presence, from diploma mills, with minimal or zero technical skills who had been here for months and looking for whatever job that they can get. I mean, if you are going to prepare for the battle, better arm yourself with well-oiled artillery. You can't fight AK-47s with swords. ( I can't think of a more apt description, sorry)

hi, dragonfly.

i read both of your posts. maraming salamat sa paalala.

isa ako sa mga umaasang makakahanap ng trabaho sa singapore. hindi pa ako nagreresign. i'm maximizing the time i have here para kumita pa. so i guess i did one thing right 8)

so sad that people have to leave to make ends meet.

Welcome to the Truman Show......

Quote:
Truman Brubank lives happily in a small, peaceful and beautiful town called Seahaven. He has a quite good job, a nice wife, and basically a happy life, until he starts to suspect that his life is a fake.

The town Seahaven is really an extremely big filmstudio (the Great wall of China and this dome are the only things that can be seen from space), full of cameras, in which the world's most famous reality show, The Truman Show is recorded and broadcasted to the entire world.
The main character is Truman, who doesn't know about that; everybody else are stunts and actors.

Truman was adopted by the film company right after his birth, they raised him with false parents, and since Seahaven is surrounded by water and they don't want Truman to get off the island, they managed to make him hydrophobic by drowning his 'father'.

One day mysterious things start to happen - a big lamp falls from the sky; Truman hears on the radio that his actions are being reported; a total stranger calls him by his name; he sees actors change dress in a bank etc.

Then he desperatedly wants to break out from Seahaven, but he is very well guarded.

Hi,

Thanks for posting this DragonFly. I heartily agreed on what you just shared. Going to another country unprepared is a disaster waiting to happen. Not even the presence of so-called 'support systems' (like having a sibling, friends, relatives and even former officemates) can never guarantee that one can get a fast and a secure job. :(

I once had a tempting job offer to work sa Japan. But had to turn it down because of my concern regarding sa compenstation package and the company's stability. It's a hard decision to give up that offer, because I've been dreaming to work and to live there eversince. Anyway I still stayed on my previous job, until I got a much better job offer. The only drawback is the company I'm currently employed is nightshift. But thankfully I managed to survive and to adjust na rin.

That was two years ago, now I'm hoping to get a much better career opportunity in Singapore. But I try to be cautious. Unlike the others; I have no relatives nor friends to assist me, add the fact I also do not that much savings to augment my stay there. I'm the breadwinner of my family so I really can't afford to be reckless in decision-making. :(

The only option left for me is hoping that a Singapore based employer, will take interest on my credentials which I posted on their online job sites. Unless I have that advantage, there's no way I can go there. So for now, I'm still working on my present job and praying that such job offer will come one soon.

I learned so many things in this forum and I'm very thankful for it really gives me a much clearer insights/views as what to expect in case I have the opportunity to work there. :D
